xv, 144 pp. Contemporary half straight-grained morocco over marbled boards. Gilt lettering to spine. Sympathetically rebacked with original spine laid down. Inner hinges renewed. Rubbing to spine and board edges. Internally clean. Binding firm. The author was First Lieutenant of the Venezuela Artillery Brigade. He was recruited in London by Don Mendez, the agent of Simon Bolivar, as part of the British Legion. These volunteers, mainly British, Irish and German, fought under Simn Bolvar against Spain for the independence of Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador in the Spanish American wars of independence. They were motivated by a combination of both genuine political ideals and mercenary motives, which the author relates in his introduction. Scarce.
